Store History
Foggy Mountain Shop opened in January 1974 in a
small second-floor space on South Franklin Street. We were the first full-service
backpacking, mountaineering, and nordic ski shop in Southeast Alaska and
are proud to continue that tradition of excellence in products and personalized
customer service more than 30 years later.
Owners
Scott Fischer
Scott is from Montana and spent his early years hunting,
fishing, and skiing in 'Big Sky' country. He graduated from the
University of Montana in Missoula, where he majored in psychology,
with unofficial minors in skiing, climbing, and road biking. He
led the first west to east Bikecentennial Trans-America bike tour
in 1976.
His climbing accomplishments include ascents in Montana's Glacier Park, the Wind River and Teton ranges in Wyoming, the Cascades in Washington, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Chimborozo in Ecuador, two ascents of Mount McKinley, an attempt of Mt. St. Elias, and a ski ascent of Mount Sanford. He is an accomplished telemark skier, and loves to skate ski and classical ski as well.
Betsy Fischer
Betsy moved to Alaska from Annapolis, Maryland, when she was 19
years old, and learned to cross country ski, rock climb, and ice
climb during her first year in Juneau.
She has skied across the Juneau Icefield from Atlin to Juneau twice, completed a challenging Twin Glacier to Mendenhall Glacier east-west ice field traverse, traversed the Brady Icefield in Glacier Bay on skis, ran the Chilkoot Trail in one day, attempted Mt. St. Elias, and skied Mt. Sanford along with husband Scott.
She also loves to telemark ski (she and Scott learned to telemark ski together on the same day back in the late 1970s). She enjoys skate skiing, but her real passion in winter is classic nordic skiing.
Both Scott and Betsy are avid sea kayakers, and have kayaked in Glacier Bay and along the outer coast of Chichagof Island, as well as numerous trips out of the Juneau area to Admiralty Island and other spots. They enjoy hiking the countless trails around Juneau and love the fact that the Alaska wilderness is just a few steps away from their front door. They take pride in helping residents and visitors alike outfit themselves for year-round recreation.
